Produced by respected Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, the wine reflects the darker fruit profile and layered character associated with this relatively warm and dry Tasmanian region. The fruit was grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel at their Brinktop Road vineyard in Penna. The 2023 vintage represents Chatto’s second single-vineyard release from this distinctive site. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, the wine combines equal portions of the MV6, D2V4 and D5V12 clones. Each clone was selected for the individual dimension it contributes to the finished blend. The D2V4, also known as Pommard, provides muscular structure and depth, while MV6 introduces spice, tension and perfumed dried-herb notes. D5V12 contributes ripe red berries and a natural sweetness that balances the wine’s more savoury elements.

The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented for approximately 10 days on skins, with regular hand plunging used for measured extraction. Indigenous yeast initiated fermentation, while approximately 12.5 per cent whole bunches contributed additional fragrance and structural complexity. The wine was matured in two- and three-year-old French oak puncheons, allowing the fruit and vineyard character to remain prominent, and was bottled in January 2024. Aromatically expressive, it combines ripe plum, cherry and wild blackberry with jasmine, citrus blossom, dried herbs and exotic spice. The palate is medium-bodied yet concentrated, showing dark cherry, mulberry, sweet berry fruit and amaro-like savouriness. Fine tannins and focused acidity provide balance, while notes of cedar, cassia bark and earth add further complexity. A savoury, stony and gently saline finish reinforces the wine’s composed structure and distinctive Coal River Valley character. Although expressive upon release, its fruit depth, acidity and fine tannins should support further development with careful cellaring.

Tasting Notes
NOSE
– Pretty and deeply aromatic
Ripe plum, dark cherry, wild blackberry, jasmine, citrus blossom, cedar, dried herbs and exotic spice.

PALATE
– Muscular and finely balanced
Dark cherry, mulberry, ripe red berries, amaro, cassia bark and earthy nuances supported by focused acidity and fine tannins.

FINISH
– Savoury and composed
Persistent dark fruit, stony minerality, dried herbs and gentle oceanic salinity carried through a structured, balanced conclusion.

Reviews & Accolades
“Single-vineyard pinot noir from the Coal River Valley ‘Killara Farm’ vineyard of Gillian Christian and Todd Goebel. Such a pretty-smelling wine. Ripe macerated plum and cherry fruits, flecked with high tones of jasmine and citrus blossom along with hints of exotic spice, amaro, a whiff of watermelon and earthen nuance. Pure and expressive with a distinctly composed air to its travel across the palate, finishing savoury, stony and wonderfully balanced.” — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points.

“Savory aromas of wild blackberries, cedar, cassia bark and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of dark cherries, mulberry bush and dried rose petals with an oceanic saltiness.
