The fruit comes from the Killara Farm vineyard on Brinktop Road in Penna, meticulously grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel. This is Chatto’s third release from the site and represents the deepest and darkest of the producer’s three grower-vineyard Pinot Noirs. The wine is made entirely from Pinot Noir, combining Clone 115 at 40 per cent with equal 20 per cent portions of D2V4, D5V12 and MV6. Clone 115 contributes perfume and fruit clarity, while the D2V4, D5V12 and MV6 components build depth, spice and structural complexity. Blackberry and liquorice form the wine’s central flavour profile, supported by red plum, dark cherry and more delicate red berry notes. Ten per cent whole bunches were incorporated during fermentation, contributing additional fragrance and savoury definition. The finished wine was bottled in December 2024 at 13.5 per cent alcohol.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"2222\"\u003eThe 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record and produced an early harvest across the island. Picking began at Killara Farm on 12 March, with dry El Niño conditions creating minimal disease pressure and favourable conditions for even ripening. According to Chatto, the resulting wines display greater flesh and structure than the preceding couple of vintages while retaining sufficient freshness for early drinking. Aromatically, the wine combines dark cherry and red plum with wild strawberry, raspberry, violet, citrus blossom and dried herbs. The palate is rich and expansive, layering dark fruit with liquorice, anise, forest floor, smoky oak and savoury spice. Fine, powdered tannins provide a firm but polished framework, while a sapid mineral quality maintains clarity and movement. Its concentrated fruit and structured profile suggest excellent potential for further development, although its brightness and balance make it approachable in its youth.
