About this bottle
Akkeshi began distilling in 2016, based in the Akkeshi District of Hokkaido, the concept of distilling and maturing single malt in Japan’s northern wilderness traces back to the very first plans of Masataka Taketsuru, a pioneer of the country’s early whisky production.
The Akkeshi Usui blend is 2nd release from the distilleries “24 Solar Terms” (Sekki) line-up. The 24 solar terms are the names that represent the seasons by dividing the year into 24 equal parts, such as the beginning of spring and the summer solstice in the distillery's series of 24 Sekki, Japan's distinctive cycle of seasons. The Usui or "Rain water" is the very first blended whisky from the distillery, Akkeshi Blended Whisky Usui is a blend of single malts distilled in Akkeshi and aged for at least three years (in a combination of bourbon, sherry, mizunara and wine casks) and a complement of imported new make grain whiskies all aged in Japan.
According to a label translation, "The sweet and fragrant peat of Akkeshi malt combined with the lightness of the grain makes it gorgeous and never gets tired of drinking."
Its harmonious and peaty profile reveals a rich and fruity nose with notes of citrus, raisins, but also cocoa and creamy custard. Reminiscent of a curacao on the palate, the citrus aromas intensify with notes of yellow and lime lemons and juicy oranges. On the finish, the milk chocolate sweetness blends with the spiciness of white pepper notes.
