André & Michel Quenard Chignin Savoie Gamay 2020
André & Michel Quenard Chignin Savoie Gamay 2020
The Savoie is a picture of fairy-tale perfection: snow-capped peaks, rolling hills, and sparkling mountain streams. This idyllic region is where Michel Quenard farms twenty-two hectares of vineyards along the steep slopes around Chignin. The domaine was started in the 1930s by Michel's grandfather. Though he slowly increased his vineyard holdings, he mostly sold off his wine. It wasn’t until 1960 that Michel’s father, André, began bottling under their own label. Michel joined the domaine in 1976. Today, he is joined by his sons, Guillaume and Romain.
The 2020 vintage of Quenard Chignin Savoie Gamay is produced using the Beaujolais's star varietal but make no mistake, this Gamay is very much from Savoie. Produced from a 30 year old vineyard the grapes were half-destemmed before being placed in stainless steel thanks for fermentation and aged for an additional 10 months. The resulting wine has notes of mixed red and black fruit and a spine of minerality, this Gamay is crunchier, more succulent, and more aromatic than those you would find in Beaujolais.
