Vineyard:
The 2022 vintage is 100% Chardonnay (multiple clones including 76 and I10V1) grown in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills. Jeffrey Grosset made his Piccadilly chardonnays and pinot noirs for many years from the Barratt vineyard, until it changed hands. He’s used The Deanery vineyard for this vintage, and while there’s less wine, the quality has certainly been maintained. The Deanery vineyard sits beneath Mt Lofty and adjacent to Cleland National Park and the Botanical Gardens, this has developed into a classic Piccadilly Valley vineyard.

Winemaking:
Barrel fermented exclusively in French oak barriques (40% new) for 10 months; only partial natural malolactic fermentation. No finings used – vegan friendly. This is a delight! It is fresh, bright, vibrant, complex and intense - in a word 'exhuberant'. There's ripe white peach, nectarine and honeydew melon flavours and, while the fruit is dominant, even expressive, there's an oak grip especially on the finish. More generous due in part to the inclusion of a new clone, it remains a pristine example of chardonnay grown in the ultra-cool Piccadilly Valley. While very satisfying young, the wine is expected to age beautifully for at least ten years.

Taste:

Nose - Exhuberant, White peach, Honeydew
Light, bright lemon-yellow colour and a subtle, reserved bouquet of lemon, almond, honey and subtle smoky, buttery croissant overtones.

Palate - Pristine, Bold, Drive
The wine is refined and intense in the mouth, with a winning combination of drive and subtlety

Finish - Flinty, Creamy, Candied Lime
Finishes with flinty strikes to the texture, and bright citrus acidity on a gently creamy finish of excellent length. Also, maybe some candied lime rind in the mix too.

Light, bright lemon-yellow colour and a subtle, reserved bouquet of lemon, almond, honey and subtle smoky, buttery croissant overtones. The wine is refined and intense in the mouth, with a winning combination of drive and subtlety. The line and length are impeccable and it promises to reward cellaring. Delicious now, too. - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 96 Points.

Nectarine, ripe lime, cashew and nougat, sweet spices and cedar, just a flicker of aniseed. It’s a flavoursome wine, bold in its delivery of classic Adelaide Hills flavour, but has excellent control and shape, with flinty strikes to the texture, and bright citrus acidity on a gently creamy finish of excellent length. Also, maybe some candied lime rind in the mix too. Very good. - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 95 Points.
