Laphroaig 14 Year Old Willem Dafoe Limited Edition, officially named Willem by Willem, is a limited-edition Islay single malt created through a collaboration between actor Willem Dafoe and Laphroaig Senior Whisky Maker Sarah Dowling. The whisky was personally selected by Dafoe alongside the distillery’s blending team after a blind evaluation of several potential expressions. Rather than relying on conventional technical descriptions during the selection process, the collaboration was guided by instinct, sensory memory and the individual character of each whisky. Dafoe ultimately chose the expression that most strongly awakened his curiosity about its flavour. The whisky was initially matured in classic American oak casks before being finished in hand-selected Oloroso sherry casks. This maturation brings the distillery’s unmistakable Islay smoke together with the darker fruit, sweetness and richness associated with Oloroso-seasoned oak. It carries a 14-year age statement and is bottled at a robust 53.7% ABV. The whisky is also presented without chill filtration, helping preserve its natural texture and concentrated flavour. 

The release deliberately arrived without conventional official tasting notes, encouraging drinkers to interpret its aromas and flavours through their own memories and sensations. Its independent tasting profile nevertheless reveals a powerful meeting of medicinal peat, maritime character and sherry-influenced fruit. Heavy smoke and iodine remain central to the expression, confirming that the Oloroso finish has not concealed Laphroaig’s distinctive distillery identity. Dark cherry, grenadine and grilled stone fruit provide sweetness and contrast against sea spray, burnt oak and earthy smoke. The palate carries substantial weight at its elevated bottling strength, combining caramel and dark dried fruit with ash, salt and peppery spice. Additional notes of red currant and charred oak add depth and structure. The finish is long and warming, leaving persistent impressions of campfire smoke, mature oak and coastal salinity. Released in limited quantities through an initial Friends of Laphroaig ballot and selected international retailers, Willem by Willem is both a collectable collaboration and a serious expression of sherry-finished Islay whisky.

NOSE
– Smoky, maritime and richly fruited
Heavy Islay peat, medicinal iodine, cherry syrup, grenadine, campfire-grilled peach, sea breeze and burnt oak.

PALATE
– Powerful and full-bodied
Rich caramel, dark dried fruits and red currant balanced by medicinal ash, sea salt, black pepper and charred oak.

FINISH
– Long and warming
Dark fruit syrup, dry mature oak, lingering campfire smoke and coastal salinity.

The Oloroso finish feels better integrated than on the 10-year-old Sherry Oak Finish from a few years ago. The smoke stays powerful and integrated at the same time, there is enough fruitiness, this is really well made. “This is a tricky one. We prefer the balance between spirit and cask before dilution, though we do have a few nitpicks, particularly with the mouthfeel.
