Penfolds Bin 600 California Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2018

In 1844 Penfolds has committed to producing wine with a quality upheld by their House Style. This allows the brand to venture outside of their borders to find the finest grapes from esteemed wine regions. Penfolds Bin 600 California Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is the result of a 20 year project, when Australia vine cuttings were originally planted in Camatta Hills California. Although these trial wines were never released, the experimentation and curiosity continued. This 2018 vintage is the inaugural release.  

Rich fruit, integrated but assertive tannin, an impression of layers. It feels cuddly and accessible at first but as it breathes its arms flex and its muscles show. There’s an earthen quality to this, high in mineral, steeped in black tea, sweet with fruit and sweet with meat. Plum into redcurrant, aromatic herb into coffee, vanilla slipped through cream. It tastes of red and blue, flowers and fruits. It has the Penfolds house style all over it but it also tastes different; there’s enough here to warrant the excursion. With every sip I became more enamoured. There’s personality here. It has presence without being weighty or overburdened. I wanted to drink more of it.
