Penfolds has a rich history dating back to 1844 when Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold arrived in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. They purchased 500 acres of land in South Australia and began producing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. Christopher's planting of vines and his philosophies continue to influence Penfolds to this day. Mary Penfold, the unsung chief of Penfolds, played a significant role in the winery's experimentations, growth and winemaking philosophies. Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker in 1948 and created the long-lasting Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. The tradition of 'bin wines' began in 1959 with Kalimna Bin 28 becoming the first official Penfolds Bin number wine. Penfolds continues to innovate, with the release of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon in 2012 and the 170th anniversary celebration in 2014. Today, Penfolds remains one of Australia's most famed and respected winemakers, driven by generations of visionaries and innovators who strive for excellence in winemaking.

Penfolds Bin 28 is a renowned expression of warm-climate Australian Shiraz, known for its ripe, robust and generously flavoured profile. This exceptional wine was first crafted in 1959 and takes its name from the iconic Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which Penfolds acquired in 1945 and initially sourced the grapes from. Over the years, Bin 28 has evolved into a blend sourced from multiple regions and vineyards, showcasing the diversity and quality of Australian Shiraz. While the wine draws from various regions, the Barossa Valley remains a significant contributor, ensuring a substantial portion of fruit for each vintage of Bin 28. With its rich history and commitment to excellence, Penfolds Bin 28 continues to captivate wine enthusiasts with its bold and distinctive character. It serves as a tribute to the warm-climate terroir of Australia and is a testament to Penfolds' mastery in crafting exceptional Shiraz wines.

The Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz 2008 is a wine of remarkable character and depth, showcasing the artistry of Penfolds' winemaking expertise. After maturing for 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads, this wine presents itself with a menacing and impenetrable black core, setting the stage for an extraordinary tasting experience. On the nose, the wine unveils classic Bin 28 fruits alongside intriguing maturation complexities. Aromas of Satsuma conserve emerge, accompanied by a subtle hint of a cigar box background, adding an element of intrigue. As the wine unfolds, notes of a basking Sunday Roast and simmering Beef Bourgogne emerge, complemented by undertones of turmeric and dark Calamatta olives. The palate showcases the wine's full-bodied nature with a confident presence. It strikes a perfect balance, neither overpowering with alcohol nor overshadowed by oak. The wine exhibits a dense and layered texture, leaving no base uncovered. Blueberry Barossa fruits take centre stage, reminiscent of Penfolds' renowned RWT expression. As the tasting journey continues, hints of Christmas Cake mix or trifle tantalize the senses, with a subtle suggestion of brandy and custard enhancing the experience. The density, texture and depth of this wine are a testament to the exceptional strength of the vintage. It embodies the dedication and craftsmanship that Penfolds brings to each bottle, resulting in a wine that is both captivating and memorable. The Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz 2008 is a true masterpiece, showcasing the incredible potential of Australian Shiraz and the remarkable artistry of Penfolds' winemaking.

The 50th Commercial Release that may rival the 1998 Bin 28. Just like Bin 28s of yore - not for the faint-hearted... fighting above its weight division! This vintage will provide both immediate allure and long-term satisfaction. Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago.
