Product Information:

Embark on a sensory journey that is anything but classic with The Macallan Classic Cut 2023 Edition. Matured in American oak ex-Bourbon casks and European oak ex-Sherry butts. This remarkable expression unveils the whisky's evolving flavour profile, enhanced by 'one cut' of water that unlocks the door to different flavours within the Classic Cut vibrant universe - at full strength (50.3%) the prominent character of the spirit is pear. When ‘one cut’ of water is added, the strength is reduced to 40% and almond biscotti steps forward as a flavour.

Maker:
Founded in 1824, The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then they have built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.

In pop culture The Macallan is perhaps most most famous for being James Bond’s favourite dram. The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gaelic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St. Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. It was here that farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, out of surplus barley during the quieter winter months.

Distillery:

The Macallan Estate origins date back to 1543 and is situated in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland. The 485-acre Macallan Estate lies in an area of natural beauty and is farmed sensitively, in harmony with the environment. It is here that they house these curiously small stills. Among the smallest on Speyside, their unique size and shape give the spirit maximum contact with the copper, helping to concentrate the ‘new make’ spirit and provide the rich, fruity, full-bodied flavours characteristic of The Macallan. There are 24 of these spirit stills, crafted from copper, each holding an initial ‘charge’ of 3,900 litres.

The Macallan's extraordinary reputation is characterised their marriage of single malt spirit and specially selected oak casks. Sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the watchful eye of the Master of Wood, the hand-picked casks are delivered to the demanding specifications of the Whisky Mastery Team. It is the oak that makes the greatest contribution to the quality, natural colour and distinctive aromas and flavours at the heart of this single malt whisky. It takes over five years of craftmanship to create their exceptional Oak Casks, derived from seasoned with sherry wine in Jerez De La Frontera, Spain. These special barrels are the single greatest contributor to the outstanding quality and distinctive aromas and flavours of The Macallan.

Once filled, the maturing spirit remains undisturbed in the same casks for the necessary number of years it needs to be worthy of its destined Macallan expression. It is these oak casks that make the greatest contribution to the quality, natural colour and distinctive aromas and flavours which lie at the heart of The Macallan single malt.
