The Yangarra Shiraz is a testament to the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the meticulous winemaking practices of the Yangarra estate. With its origins in the southern Rhône, this Shiraz has evolved to showcase the best of South Australian reds. Sourced from six distinct blocks on the elevated site, this wine is shaped by the sandy soils and ironstone that overlay the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation. The intage was marked by a hot spring that led to record-low yields. However, the weather miraculously cooled during the ripening season, resulting in a wine with wonderful concentration of flavour, natural acidity, and brightness of fruit. The finesse and balanced tannins of the Yangarra Shiraz are a testament to the winemaking team's dedication to quality. The wine was fermented with wild yeast in open fermenters and on skins for up to 20 days. A gentle maceration principle was used to wet the cap and only drain and return when reductive. No pressings were used in this wine, ensuring a pure expression of the fruit. The wine was then aged on lees in 1 to 3-year French oak puncheons for 7 months before being blended to older 45hL foudre for a further 7 months. In the glass, the Yangarra Shiraz is a deep ruby red with aromas of blackberry, plum and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, chocolate and a hint of vanilla. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, providing a long, satisfying finish. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to come. The Yangarra Shiraz is a beautifully crafted wine that showcases the unique terroir and winemaking practices of the Yangarra estate.
From six estate blocks, split between ironstone and sand, destemmed with half left as whole berries; élevage in French puncheons, with 25% new and the remainder 1–3-year-old oak. This is remarkably pretty upfront, bursting with red berries and cherries, underneath a bedrock of ferrous minerality – the split of soils writ large – along with baking spices and rosy florals. Trademark Yangarra tannins kick in swiftly and carry the flavours long through a savoury finish. This is charming, but it’s also built for food. Seems like a very fine year for shiraz at this address. - Marcus Ellis, James Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points.
Bright, deep purple colour; aromas of dark plum and blackberry with a slightly smoked-meaty reductive overtone. The wine is rich and deeply fruit-sweet on the palate. Blackberry conserve. Luscious fruit and abundant soft, powdery tannins. - Huon Hooke, 93 Points.
An exuberantly floral, full-bodied shiraz, with the inherent elegance of Blewitt Springs, a grand cru in local parlance. Iodine, saddle leather, dried lavender and lilacs, with notes of boysenberry and cream. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap. - Ned Goodwin, JamesSuckling.com, 93 Points.
