Product Description

The Yuza Distillery Second Edition Cask Strength Single Malt Japanese Whisky 2022 is a remarkable expression of dedication, craft, and time. This whisky is composed of select single malts from Yuza Distillery’s inaugural distillation season, from February to July 2019, and offers a complex and refined profile with a smooth, creamy texture, light peat influences, and a robust fruity character. Bottled at 62% ABV, this cask strength release offers layers of flavor that reflect the region’s unique terroir and the distillery's commitment to quality.

Hailing from Yamagata Prefecture, Japan’s first whisky-producing region, Yuza Distillery is set to become a star in the whisky world. Using the pristine, soft water sourced from the snowmelt of nearby Mount Chōkai, this limited-edition whisky combines traditional distillation methods with innovative techniques to create a spirit of exceptional character. The Second Edition is a more complex, deeper release than the First Edition, with the whisky’s maturation in Sherry casks providing additional richness and depth.

This 2022 release highlights the distillery’s growing expertise, combining rich orchard fruit, delicate peat, and a rounded finish, making it a compelling choice for whisky enthusiasts. A true Japanese whisky, it embodies the dedication and precision that is Yuza’s hallmark.

Maker

Yuza Distillery was established in 2018 in Yamagata Prefecture, marking Japan’s first whisky distillery in this region. It is the brainchild of Masaharu Sasaki, who sought to create a whisky that combined traditional Japanese whisky-making techniques with the best influences from Scotland. The distillery’s collaboration with Forsyths, the world-renowned Scottish still manufacturer, ensures the use of high-quality, custom-designed distillation equipment, including Canadian Douglas Fir washbacks and a Glendronach-inspired spirit still.

The small, specialized operation focuses solely on single malt production, utilizing the pristine water from Mount Chōkai and mature ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks. While it is still early days for Yuza, the distillery has already earned recognition for its meticulous attention to detail and its commitment to quality over quantity. Every batch produced is a testament to the craft of its team, which is dedicated to creating whiskies that will stand the test of time.

Philosophy

Yuza Distillery’s philosophy is built around the concept of creating authentic Japanese whisky that stands on its own, offering a unique expression of its environment. By focusing on small-batch production, each whisky reflects the pure water from the snowmelt of Mount Chōkai and the distinctive terroir of the region. Their commitment to traditional distilling techniques—combined with innovation—allows them to produce whisky that offers a sense of place and purity in every drop.

The distillery is dedicated to sustainability and craftsmanship, using 100% barley sourced from Crisp Maltings and gradually introducing local barley into their grain mix. Yuza’s commitment to single malt production is paired with a focus on long-term maturation in hand-selected casks, resulting in whiskies that are full of character and depth.

Tasting Notes

NOSE
Fruity & Fragrant
Dried stone fruits—fig and apricot—as well as subtle notes of peat and cereal grain. A faint smokiness evolves into richer, sweeter aromas of apple and pear, with a touch of vanilla and spice adding complexity.

PALATE
Smooth & Full-bodied
Creamy and rich with lush stone fruit flavours and a delicate hint of peat. Oat and spice notes—including cinnamon and oak—add depth and character, perfectly balanced with the whisky’s smooth texture.

FINISH
Dry & Complex
Traces of liquorice, a mineral tang, and a light smoky edge. The complexity and well-integrated peat create a finish that is both refreshing and satisfying.
